Can I throw in 'chronically misunderstood' there? There's an awful lot of 'I've put on a corset and a monacle hail my steampunkery' going on around these parts xD. I love books like The Difference Engine and a lot of the comic work that goes on in the steampunk area...but it's really getting homogenized with all this 'Cybergoth' crap that's arisen over the last few years. Like it's being used by 20 something pretty-boys and girls as an excuse to just slap on more PVC and dye their hair a new colour again you know...god, I sound like an old man. I'm gonna go listen to some Godflesh and read some Lovecraft while the kids throw pennies at me and call me a hippy.

Well...that's if they kill me, not decide to kidnap me afterwards <_<. Seriously though, I'm open to freedom of expression, it just seems like there's a popularising and marginalising going on of real cyberpunk, goth and steampunk into this one amalgam that's got the looks in spades but nothing going on upstairs xP.

It is a little sad, but then again, this IS how these things tend to evolve over the years. The next generation picks it up and carries it on in their own way. I wish it was being treated with a little more care though ;)

I think I'd be fine with it if it was another rebellious forward thinking form of the same thing...but it's kind of the looks without the punk or the thought. That's what scares me about it. It's not everyone my best mate is very much of the cyber/raver mould and youngish, but very punkrock too, she doesn't just do it cos it looks awesome. But I feel there's a lot of that kind of behaviour going on.
